The phrase eye surgery usually brings to mind the corrective surgeries for vision that are performed just on the eye itself. Yet there are certain medical conditions and cosmetic surgeries that require the specialized skills of an oculoplastic surgeon. Oculoplastic surgery deals specifically with the eyelid, orbit of the eye, and the tear ducts for either reconstructive or corrective surgery. Mehryar (Ray) Taban, MD, has experience in both reconstructive and cosmetic oculoplastic surgery and is proud to practice in the greater Los Angeles area. Oculoplastic Surgery BenefitsOculoplastic surgery can be used to deal with many medical conditions that arise from aging, injuries, disfiguring birth defects, and even conditions caused by the thyroid, specifically Graves’ disease. These conditions may show up as drooping eyelids, tear duct blockage, and in some extreme cases bulging and protrusion of the eyes. Many of these conditions can be irritating and/or affect one’s vision, making oculoplastic surgery medically necessary. Dr. Taban has not only trained for an extra two years to be able to specialize in this field of medicine but is also an assistant clinical professor of Oculoplastic Surgery at UCLA, teaching these specialized techniques to future surgeons.

Horner syndrome is a rare disorder that occurs when certain nerves that travel from your brain to your eyes and face are damaged. Horner syndrome isn’t a disease itself, but is usually a sign of another medical problem, such as a stroke, tumor or spinal cord injury. Accordingly, there is no real treatment of the syndrome, but the underlying cause and resulting symptoms can be treated. One of the most common symptoms – droopy eyelids (ptosis) – can be treated by Dr. Mehryar (Ray) Taban through surgery.

The eyes, one of the most complex and delicate organs of the body, are unfortunately very vulnerable to outside irritants and infection. Like most parts of the body, the eye reacts to irritation in its own unique ways. If you notice that one or both of your eyes is swollen, or has other unusual symptoms, you may have mild chemosis. Fortunately, chemosis is easily treated if caught early, so you should consult a doctor right away if you believe you have the condition. Oculoplastic surgeon Dr. Mehryar (Ray) Taban is very experienced in the treatment of all stages of chemosis and can evaluate your condition.

Are you walking around with puffy, baggy or tired-looking eyes and nothing seems to help? You've tried eye creams and have even managed to squeeze in more time to sleep in hopes of improving the appearance of your eyes with little to no results? A surgical technique called lower blepharoplasty is the technical term used for surgical rejuvenation for lower eyelids. Many patients, both young and old, have turned to this procedure in order to combat the tired puffy look and have enjoyed gratifying results. Dr. Mehryar (Ray) Taban, an oculoplastic surgeon, offers eyelid plastic surgery in Beverly Hills and has helped many patients combat the puffy eyelid look. But what causes the puffiness in the lower lid in the first place?

The major causes of the puffy tired look, particularly in the lower lid, include: genetics, lack of sleep, and poor skin elasticity. Overall, these can give you an older or sleepy appearance.
