Please refer to the main Ptosis (Droopy Eyelid) page for additional information and background on eyelid ptosis. The current page will focus only on mild eyelid ptosis.
Upper eyelid ptosis (blepharoptosis, droopy upper eyelid) is due to inherited or acquired weakening or loosening of the levator muscle/tendon, which is responsible for lifting the upper eyelid. Eyelid ptosis can be mild and go unnoticed by the patient and observers. It can be symmetric or asymmetric, in which one eye is worse than the other. Asymmetric ptosis can cause the eyes and eyelid creases to appear uneven. It can even make someone appear tired or drunk! Mild eyelid ptosis usually does not affect the vision. Cosmetic eyelid ptosis surgery (eyelid lift) can be performed to lift the upper eyelid, creating a more symmetrical, youthful and wakeful appearance. If you’re interested in undergoing cosmetic eyelid ptosis, you should feel free to contact expert oculoplastic surgeon Dr. Mehryar (Ray) Taban for a consultation.
How Is Cosmetic Upper Eyelid Ptosis Performed?
Cosmetic eyelid ptosis (droopy eyelid) surgery works by tightening the levator muscle/tendon to lift the droopy upper eyelid. There are many techniques used in ptosis surgery, and the exact technique depends on the severity of the eyelid ptosis, strength of the levator muscle, and previous eyelid surgery. Cosmetic eyelid ptosis surgery is usually performed using a hidden incision behind the upper eyelid (posterior eyelid approach ptosis surgery or internal ptosis surgery or mullerectomy). Patients achieve excellent eyelid contour in a predictable manner and no scarring.
Cosmetic droopy eyelid surgery can be combined with other eyelid surgeries such as blepharoplasty.
Ptsosis surgery is performed under either local anaesthesia (similar to the kind used by dentists) or under sedation anaesthesia/twilight sleep (similar to the kind used for colonoscopies). The recovery is painless, though you may suffer a black eye for 7-10 days.
Dr. Taban will evaluate and perform various tests during your consultation to determine the best ptosis surgery (eyelid lift) technique for the individual patient.
