LATISSE™ (bimatoprost ophthalmic solution 0.03%) is the first and only FDA approved solution for eyelash growth. It is a prescription treatment for eyelash growth and making them thicker, longer, and darker. Its active ingredient (bimatoprost) was originally used in glaucoma and found to have the “side effect” of eyelash growth. It is believed that it works but increasing the amount and prolonging the duration of the hairs in the anagen (or growth) phase of eyelash cycle.
LATISSE™ is applied once-a-day (or less) to the base of the eyelashes, just like applying mascara. This is best done at nights before bedtime. (For full instructions, click on this link.). It can be used concurrently with other makeup, such as mascara. Results can be expected starting at 4 weeks, with full effects after about 12-16 weeks. If you stop using LATISSE™, your eyelashes are expected to return to their original appearance over several weeks to months.
Prior to using LATISSE™, each patient should get an eye examination from ophthalmologist. There are various possible side effects of LATISSE™. The most common are itching and eye redness, which usually means too much LATISSE™ solution is being used or being used incorrectly. Other rare reported side effects include periocular skin darkening and pupil color change.
